California Newspaper Quotes Prof. Jeff McCall '76 in XM-Sirius Story
Even though Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin is expressing his support for a proposed merger of satellite radio networks Sirius and XM, it is not a done deal. Jeffrey M. McCall, professor of communication at DePauw University, tells California's North County Times, "There is still a chance that the conditions to be imposed on a merger might be hard for the satcasters to swallow, even though they are talking in a cooperative spirit at the moment."

Mike Terry '74 Named Interim President & CEO of IndyGo
Michael A. Terry, a 1974 graduate of DePauw University, has been named interim president and CEO of IndyGo, the public transportation service in Indianapolis. Terry takes over for the retiring Gilbert Holmes, who had led the agency for six years.

National Hispanic Institute Again Brings Youth Leadership Conference Here
DePauw University is one of four colleges across the nation to host a Young Leaders Conference (YLC), presented by the National Hispanic Institute. From July 5-9, as many as 100 students who will be sophomores at high schools across the midwest will come to DePauw for the weeklong program. YLCs will also take place at Villanova, Washington State and Sul Ross State universities.

NPR and PBS Affiliates Cover President Brian Casey's First Day at DePauw
"DePauw University's 19th President has moved into his office on the school's Greencastle campus," began a report that aired on Bloomington, Indiana National Public Radio affiliate WFIU this morning. "Brian Casey served as a dean of academic affairs at Harvard, where he also earned a Ph.D. in history, following studies at Stanford and Notre Dame." The station, which was on campus yesterday to interview Dr. Casey, notes his excitement about DePauw and his eagerness to work with the University's faculty to make the experience offered by the liberal arts college even more distinctive.

Daniel Bretscher '06 Wins His First Pro Triathlon
Daniel Bretscher, a 2006 graduate of DePauw University, won Sunday's MedExpress Spirit of Morgantown Half Triathlon. "Competing in just his third half-ironman (1/2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run) as a professional, Bretscher came away with his first pro victory on a day when surviving meant just as much as winning," reports the Dominion Post of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Indiana Must Get Moving Toward Mass Transportation, Students Write in Indianapolis Star
"In his June 22 column, Star Editor Dennis Ryerson presented 10 reasons why mass transportation in Central Indiana would not succeed," begins a letter by four DePauw University students, which is published in today's edition of the Indianapolis newspaper. "Here are our counterpoints for why Indianapolis will seize the opportunity to invest in mass transportation." Senior Elizabeth Lunik, junior Tiffany Nichols, and sophomores Anthony Baratta and Craig Melancon are identified by the paper as "members of DePauw University's Environmental Policy group."

Vienna International Youth and Music Festival's Judges Include Prof. Orcenith Smith
Orcenith Smith, professor in the DePauw University School of Music, is headed to Austria where will serve on the five-member international adjudicating team for the Vienna International Youth and Music Festival, July 10-15. The sole American judge, Professor Smith will join four Austrian arbiters to rate orchestras, choirs, and bands which come from a wide range of countries, including China, Russia, South Africa, Finland, Brazil, Estonia, Canada, Latvia, Poland, the Bahamas, and the United States.

DePauw Community Treated to Ice Cream Reception by New President Brian Casey
On his first day as president of DePauw University, Brian Casey welcomed his new colleagues by treating them to an old-fashioned summer favorite. In a campus-wide e-mail sent at 10:30 this morning, Dr. Casey invited all members of the DePauw community to gather on East College lawn at 2 p.m. for a reception featuring ice cream.

A Record June at This Web Site
DePauw.edu saw a significant year-over-year increase in traffic during June, with all-time highs for the month in three key categories, including more than 16 million "hits" and 311,000 unique visitors. With students away for the summer, June is typically the month with the lightest volume at this Web site, but a strong increase in international traffic was one of the factors that pushed some statistics up by between ten and fifteen percent.

Singer-Songwriter David McMillin '06 a 'Best of Chicago' Pick
Singer-songwriter David McMillin, a 2006 graduate of DePauw University, is a 2008 "Reader's Choice Award" winner for best folk, country, or Americana act in the Chicago Reader. McMillin's selection is noted in the weekly paper's "Best of Chicago" edition.

DePauw's 19th President, Brian W. Casey, Takes the Reins of the University

"I'm unpacking boxes and getting my office organized. "I feel as if I know so many of DePauw faculty and staff because they've written to me. One of my first job is to thank people for all of the wonderful welcomes they've given me."

Vernon Jordan '57 Among the Luminaries Supporting 'Possible Dreams' Fundraiser
Vernon Jordan, "the noted Washington insider and civil rights advocate," is donating a "golf dream package" as part of the annual Possible Dreams Auction on Martha's Vineyard, reports the Cape Cod Times. Jordan, a 1957 graduate of DePauw University, "will host the winning bidder and two guests for lunch and a round at Farm Neck in Oak Bluffs."

David Forsell '89 Receives 2008 Cultural Vision Award
David E. Forsell, president of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and 1989 graduate of DePauw University, is among ten recipients of a 2008 NUVO Cultural Vision Award. Established ten years ago, the program recognizes individuals and organizations in Indianapolis doing innovative work and to celebrate the spirit of community. "The NUVO Cultural Vision Awards are about shining a light on the talented people and creative enterprises," write the weekly newspaper's editors.

Entering Class of 634 Students to be Most Diverse in DePauw's History
DePauw University is preparing to welcome 634 new students to its campus in August, including a group of 69 young scholars from outside of the United States. "This will be the largest entering class of international non-citizen students in DePauw's 171-year history," says Stefanie Niles, vice president for admission and financial aid. "The global reach of our institution has never been greater."
